Introduction to Astrology by Apollo |
||||
Although astrology can be
considered a type of science, it falls more under the category of
metaphysics—the study of that which is beyond the physical. It’s
similar to other fields that are founded on ancient theories of
energy patterns, like feng shui, acupuncture, and yoga. Astrology is
actually a mastery of both science and the intuitive arts. As the
earliest known ordering of existence, long before recorded history,
astrology has been called the “Mother of all Sciences.” Any study of the history of astrology must begin with the Babylonians, who are commonly thought to have invented it. The Babylonians left us one of the earliest astrological documents that date back to 1600 B.C.! However, it was the Greeks who are credited with the invention of the personal Horoscope (or what astrologers call the Natal or Birth Chart) by interpreting astrological placements to reveal characteristics and personality traits of individuals. The Birth Chart is used to calculate the relative positions of the planets in the solar system on the date you were born, and it serves as a map of one’s life and psyche. There are four major components to any birth chart: Planets, Signs, Houses and Aspects and every Birth Chart has unique placements of all of these. To delineate their meanings, their influences are combined to understand their potential manifestations in a person’s life. Each planet symbolizes an area of personal expression (the Sun and Moon are technically called luminaries, but for convenience they are also referred to as planets in astrology). In fact, astrology is just as complex as people themselves! When a person asks your “sign” they are referring to your Sun Sign, which is the zodiacal sign position of the Sun at the time of your birth. Besides the sign of the Sun (Basic Personality), each person has zodiacal positions of the Moon (Emotions), Mercury(Communication), Venus (Love Life), Mars (Actions), and so forth. Furthermore, as each of the planets fall under certain Signs and Houses, other information about the quality and specific areas of expression as thematically represented by the Planets are revealed. Astrology can be used as a powerful and fun tool for understanding ourselves, our relationship with others, and the world around us. We use many different tools, or languages, to define and understand our world. For example, we can use psychological tools and terminology to explore human behavior. Similarly, astrology gives us rich tools for understanding human character, and offers us a language for communicating our observations with others. It can be said then that astrology is the vocabulary of Personality. At times life may seem like a series of random and meaningless events, but astrology can reveal invisible forces influencing us that perhaps things do happen for a reason and that we all have a great unfolding destiny to fulfill |
